Proposed Development:

Planning permission and listed building consent was secured in late 2022 on behalf of Brighton and Hove City Council for an ambitious pilot scheme to commence the restoration and renewal of the internationally renowned Grade II* listed Madeira Terrace to provide a linear public park and grandstand space (consisting of the 40 arches between the Royal Crescent Steps in the west to Shelter Hall in the east). This iconic structure synonymous with the City of Brighton and its eastern seafront required extensive research and investigation in respect of its’ condition having been exposed to a harsh marine environment for over a century, with the core objective being to seek to practically and viably retain as much of the original structure as possible whilst still securing its’ long-term future.

The project included the restoration and recommissioning of the existing shelter hall lift, the provision of a new contemporary lift structure and stairs and public realm works within Madeira Drive.

Another key challenge of the project related to the protection and ecological enhancement of the existing living green wall forming the backdrop to the Madera Terrace, having been originally planted by the Victorians at the time of the construction of the terrace.

This project formed part of the Council’s more expansive eastern seafront regeneration ambitions, which included the neighbouring Black Rock infrastructure and land reclamation project (now implemented) for which NTR Planning were also planning consultants.

The Madeira Terrace project is due to commence on site in 2025.
