Moulsecoombe Place, Brighton
ResidentialProposed Development:
Planning permission and listed building consent was secured on behalf of the Cathedral Group in 2024 for a major mixed use development scheme consisting of demolition of existing student accommodation and replacement with 4 student accommodation buildings of up to 15 storeys in height (providing a total of 566 student beds) and associated ancillary facilities including gym, café, commercial space and a new community room for the surrounding population of Moulsecoomb. In addition, these far reaching proposals included measures to alter, repair, and extend the Grade II listed Manor House and Tithe Barn to provide a reinvigorated facility consisting of Social Club, and creation of hub for a public house, restaurant, hotel and events space, including the historic restoration of the listed gardens for wider future use by the surrounding community and users of the new facility.
This scheme achieved the optimum balance between the provision of much needed student accommodation within the City of Brighton, reducing pressure on the general housing stock at a time of acute undersupply of housing, and balancing this with the sensitive restoration of an important listed asset, including the protection of context and key views. This project was a model of effective and efficient collaboration with the City planning department and key stakeholders.
